Biography – Artificial Minds

Artificial Minds is the professional practice and artistic identity of a UK-based DJ and electronic music producer whose engagement with the field of electronic music spans nearly three decades. Initiating his DJ career in 1996 within local club environments, his early experiences contributed to the development of a nuanced understanding of audience interaction, musical curation, and the cultural dynamics of underground dance music.

Drawing on Thornton’s (1995) concept of “subcultural capital,” these formative experiences informed an awareness of taste-making and authenticity within club culture, shaping both artistic identity and performance practice. This foundation continues to underpin his approach to DJing as a socially and culturally situated activity.

In 2008, his practice expanded into music production under the alias Sunset Moments, marking a transition from performance-based work to a broader creative methodology encompassing composition, sound design, and digital production techniques. This evolution reflects an ongoing commitment to artistic development and aligns with contemporary practices within electronic music production, particularly those outlined by Théberge (1997) in relation to technology-mediated creativity.

His work is characterised by a focus on melodic structure, harmonic depth, and emotional resonance, situating his output within the wider context of melodic and progressive electronic music. From an analytical perspective, this approach reflects Tagg’s (2013) theories on music as a communicative system, where sonic elements function as carriers of affect and meaning.

His productions have received recognition and support from established international artists including Chicane, Hernán Cattáneo, and Matt Fax, demonstrating both industry relevance and the capacity to engage with a global audience. This engagement reflects Jenkins’ (2006) notion of participatory culture, in which digital platforms facilitate interaction between artists, audiences, and industry figures.

In addition to his creative output, he has established Sunset Emotions, an independent record label that functions as both a distribution platform and a curatorial space for melodic and emotionally driven electronic music. This initiative reflects an entrepreneurial approach consistent with Hesmondhalgh’s (2013) analysis of the cultural industries, particularly in relation to independent production and the shifting structures of music distribution in the digital age.

Artificial Minds represents an integrated practice that combines performance, production, and label development. His work emphasises the experiential and affective qualities of sound, positioning music not only as a form of entertainment but as a medium for emotional communication and artistic expression.
